The emergence of new technologies and industries hasn't lowered the demand for workers in traditional trades such as tool and die making and general machining. But skilled trades people do require new skills for the 21st century – and the Sheridan Mechanical Techniques–Tool and Die program prepares students for that challenge.
Our Tool and Die Maker certificate program provides top-notch preparation for apprenticeship and employment in precision machining and tooling. Students go a long way in just 30 weeks, learning the most current practices in precision machining while earning a credential that employers respect.
Sheridan's unsurpassed tool and die training facilities feature the most current, sophisticated machinery, including Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment – the same industry-standard equipment you'll use in the workplace. Students get plenty of hands-on experience in the shop, as well as supporting courses such as:
- Precision machining theory
- Mechanical drafting
- Computer-aided drafting (CAD)
- CNC manual part programming
- CNC computerized programming
- Trade calculations
- Workplace safety
Students also learn how to conduct a job search, maintain proper work documentation, and communicate effectively on the job. Sheridan’s instructors have years of experience as practicing tool and die makers and general machinists. They’ll serve as mentors and career coaches long after you’ve graduated.
Transfer Opportunities
Your Mechanical Techniques–Tool and Die Maker certificate may qualify you to progress into the more advanced program Mechanical Technician–Tool Making Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship program. Students must successfully complete the certificate program to be eligible to transfer to the diploma apprenticeship program. You may also choose to continue your education in related Technician and Technology diploma programs at Sheridan. Advanced standing will be granted for equivalent courses.
Mechanical Techniques–Tool and Die Maker courses are held at the Skills Training Centre in Oakville, Ontario.
Graduates of Sheridan’s Mechanical Techniques–Tool and Die Maker Program are in high demand as apprentices and employees in precision metal machining occupations. They commonly gain employment in positions such as:
- Tool and die makers
- Tool /Tooling makers
- General machinists
- Machine tool builder and integrators
- Mould makers
- Pattern makers
- CNC machinists
- Industrial mechanics (millwrights)
Program Eligibility
Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:
- One English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U)
or
Mature student status. (See “Admissions” section for details.)
Applicant Selection
Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).
Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.
