Jordan Morrison

Turning an Obsession into a Career

Bachelor of Applied Arts (Photography)

Graduation Year: 2003

Before he loved taking pictures, Jordan Morrison loved looking at them. He liked the idea of having something recorded. Jordan remembers looking at images and wanting to try to capture them himself. After being given a 35 mm camera at age 15, he fell in love with photography.

The Ottawa-born grad grew up in Australia. He returned to Canada in 1998 where he enrolled in Montreal’s Vanier College. Jordan also took a classic black-and-white photography course, in which he found endless inspiration.

His desire to travel then took him to Halifax, where for two years he worked part-time and studied freelance photography at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

Realizing that photography was more than just a hobby, Jordan decided to develop his talents into a career. His father had been researching schools and found Sheridan. Not only did the college have a highly rated photography program but it boasted a varsity basketball team. But the Applied Photography course turned out to be far more demanding than Jordan had anticipated.

“Adding the commitments of being part of the men’s varsity basketball team wasn’t easy to say the least, although the college did have help for students like me. Without the assistance of Rob Till, Dean of Student Affairs, I would not have passed my second semester,”recalls Jordan.

“My time at Sheridan was unforgettable. Being a student may seem like you’re there forever, but when you graduate and move on with your career, you’ll realize it was a very short time indeed.”

Soon after graduation Jordan moved back to Australia and photographed the eastern shore line. “After spending 10 months down under I moved back to Ontario and set up my existing company,” says Jordan, who has been the Sheridan varsity athletics photographer for several years.

Currently, Jordan is photographing fine art for an art reproduction company, an interest he has developed in part because his wife is an artist. He also does portraiture and wedding photography.
